IS YOUR BODY RESISTANT TO WEIGHT LOSS?

The world we live in isn’t a level playing field. It has nothing to do with your blood type, eye colour or cultural background. It has everything to do with your somatotype.

A genetically inherited body type identified by your bone structure and body composition. Each somatotype influences your body’s ability to lose weight, but one is more resistant than them all.

Which somatotype are you?

Ectomorphs: small bone structure, thin limbs, think endurance athlete. Blessed with a fast metabolic rate and a high carbohydrate tolerance. They do best on a diet around 55% carb, 25% protein and 20% fat.

Mesomorphs: medium bone structure, athletic body, think gymnast. Blessed with the ability to easily put on muscle and maintain low body fat. They do best on a diet around 40% carb, 30% protein and 30% fat.

Endomorphs: large bone structure, thick frames, high amounts of muscle and fat mass, think rugby union prop forward. Cursed by generally being less active and with a low tolerance to carbs.

There are no prizes for guessing which somatotype has a body that is resistant to weight loss. It is clear that this is not a level playing field. The Endomorphs typically do best with a diet around 25% carb, 35% protein and 40% fat.
No body type makes you totally immune to being overweight.

The laws of thermodynamics still apply. The relationship between ‘energy in’ and ‘energy out’ is still the defining factor that determines if you put on weight or lose weight.

Your somatotype is just one factor that is going to influence this equation. Others include your sex hormones, how much protein you consume, exercise frequency/type/intensity, age, medication and your genetic predisposition.

The data points you require to lose weight are totally unique. To guarantee weight loss it requires one-on-one problem solving and constantly manipulating the variables to get the right result.

That is why we require automatic sleep and exercise tracking through a wearable device in combination with a food diary for all weight loss clients. That is where you start.

An accountant can’t do your tax without data. A coach can’t create weight loss without the necessary data.

What we find is that everyone is different. Everyone will lose weight at different rates. But no mater who you are consistent and long-lasting weight loss is achievable.

There is a way.

David is an Executive Athlete today, but on the day I met him he had given up. As he says, he was “hiding from real life and hiding from the truth”. He used humour as a way of keeping criticism of his expanding waistline at bay. He was frustrated and embarrassed, and convinced that exercise just wasn’t for him anymore.

Becoming a parent is the purest form of leadership. Yet, the best leaders can struggle with this relationship the most. This is the voice of regret from a marketing executive who spent the first 14 years of his daughter’s life tethered to his desk. Leadership is hard to execute from a distance. To win the love, trust and friendship of your children sometimes you have to get in the trenches and play.

To create an Executive Athlete, we need to start with the basic skills of movement. We need to ensure that the executive makes it to the end of every exercise session. They must possess the freedom of movement that the athlete enjoys if they are going to become an Executive Athlete.
