DOES YOUR COMPANY CULTURE FOSTER FITNESS?

Should you pay employees to exercise during work hours? This is the question that is answered by calculating the ROI of exercise. The research shows that exercise is beneficial but to what degree?

Decision makers are left to navigate this question with their own metrics. One fast-growing tech company made sure they built fitness into how they do business.

This question — does your company culture foster fitness — was raised in a Linkedin post by Ryan Holmes, the CEO of Hootsuite.

Ryan’s personal experiences with exercise lead him to believe that ‘it’s such a clear win-win’ that he built a gym and yoga studio in their corporate headquarters. Dedicated trainers run exercise classes and all employees can block off an hour from their day to exercise at any time of the day.

This is a company culture that fosters fitness. Holmes believes the benefits are felt in 3 ways — health, morale, and productivity.

There are financial benefits as well. Holmes describes the commitment to enable exercise at the office, as ‘for health, for morale and, yes, for the bottom line, it’s the best decision we could have made.’

If you are a leader of a team what are the decisions that you are making that benefit the health, morale, and productivity of your team?

When you improve the health, morale, and productivity of your team can you measure the correlation to your ‘bottom line’?

Could you achieve all of that but just fostering an environment for your team to exercise?

This is the voice of regret from a marketing executive who spent the first 14 years of his daughter’s life tethered to his desk. Leadership is hard to execute from a distance. To win the love, trust and friendship of your children sometimes you have to get in the trenches and play.

To create an Executive Athlete, we need to start with the basic skills of movement. We need to ensure that the executive makes it to the end of every exercise session. They must possess the freedom of movement that the athlete enjoys if they are going to become an Executive Athlete.
