EXECUTIVE ATHLETE #3: ANDREW THORN

ANDREW WAS READY TO MAKE SURE THIS WAS THE BEST YEAR EVER

THE CHALLENGE

"I don't think my physical appearance matches how I am in business life. I am successful, have a great team, awesome tech, we are really pushing boundaries. But there is this stigma attached to people who are overweight as being lazy, which is crazy because I don't consider myself to be lazy, but in one aspect of my life...I am."

THE STORY
Hannah and Sue were worried. The two most senior members of Digitalmaas had watched their CEO, Andrew, work himself into the ground. Hannah was concerned that the culture of working marathon hours, that is so common in techstart ups, had become the norm. Andrew explains, "I think I was looking for someone to reach out, they probably knew I was looking for help, but I didn't know it myself."
Andrew shared that he often doesn't know why some things happen in life. Rather than question them he is grateful when they occur. "Half the work I have in my job I am thankful that people prep for me. I rely on people better than me to make me a better person and play to my strengths. The fact they said, you have to see Jonathan, when I heard this, I actually thought - thank god someone has done something about it."

THE SOLUTION

The first step was to get Andrew to sleep. The transition was quick: "I told you that I can work on four hours sleep like its a badge of honour. Then you start talking about the player readiness score, so I increased my sleep and now I am about to walk into a really difficult meeting. Normally, I would have anxiety and stress about it, but its what I have to do, its the right thing for the business, I am fine with it."

Andrew's wife could see the difference. One night she turned to him and asked, "Why are you so chatty all the time? I was going to sit here and watch my shows, but now you want to talk?" Andrew found this hilarious and replied, "If I was you, I would get used to it."
Andrew made the decision that no more is he willing to sacrifice time with his family for business success. The biggest change is the weekend. Rather than spending time on the laptop on the couch, they are spent in the park with his son and daughter.
Andrew just wanted to get his priorities right, he just wanted to be doing the right things, at the right time with the right people.
Andrew had to work with our physiotherapist Matt McCutcheon to release the tension in his back built up from spending hours and hours at the desk. The work with the physio was supported in the gym to develop the mobility around his hips to alleviate the pain that he often felt in his neck, shoulder and knees. The transformation in Andrew's strength has been remarkable. A guy who once couldn't trust his back can now deadlift 60kg off the floor with ease.
